The Valkyries' playoff run is drawing some of the Bay Area's biggest stars
Bay Area celebrities such as George Lucas, Kehlani and Ali Wong showed their support for the team in San Francisco over the weekend.
The Golden State Valkyries are turning San Francisco's Chase Center into a celebrity hotspot as they continue to dominate their first postseason run.
"Star Wars" creator George Lucas, comedian Ali Wong, rapper E-40 and Grammy Award-winning singer Kehlani were among the local stars at Ballhalla to cheer on the team over the weekend.
"Actually, it's my first time and that's not my fault, I'm a busy girl," Kehlani said in a video posted to Chase Center's Instagram account on Sunday, Oct. 4. "But I would love to come all the time and I'm so thoroughly impressed and so proud that we have a team."
The "Folded" singer was back in the Bay Area to close her self-titled tour with two shows at Mountain View's Shoreline Amphitheatre on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4. The Oakland native brought out Fresno singer Ezra, San Francisco rapper Karri, Vallejo rap collective SOBxRBE and her 7-year-old daughter Adeya as surprise guests during her live performances.
While watching the Valkyries take on the Las Vegas Aces before her Sunday concert, Kehlani took selfies with the team's mascot, Violet, and several players. She also posed for a photo on the court with San Francisco DJ Noodles, a frequent tour collaborator.
For Wong's part, the San Francisco native took a break from her ongoing comedy tour to sound the ceremonial drum before Sunday's game. Unlike Kehlani, Wong has been spotted at several Valkyries games since the WNBA team launched last year.
The Valkyries won 71-60 over the Aces. The two teams face off again for Game 2 of the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Chase Center.
Other stars in attendance at Sunday's game included Olympic swimmer Natalia Coughlin; Meena Harris, niece of former Vice President Kamala Harris; and content creator Brittany Hampton.
Before Sunday's celebrity-filled game, Friday, Oct. 2, drew its own notable crowd. Lucas made a rare public appearance at Game 3 of the Valkyries' first-round WNBA playoff series against the Dallas Wings with his wife, Mellody Hobson. The Valkyries won 77-73 to make the semifinals.
The couple recently opened the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, which showcases an array of paintings, photography, sculptures, comic art and more.
Vallejo rapper E-40, a regular at Golden State Warriors games, was also spotted Friday.
Prior to that, fellow Bay Area rapper Too Short attended the franchise's first-ever home playoff game, Game 1 of the first round against the Wings on Sept. 27, and performed live during halftime.
Fans can likely expect more celebrity appearances at Ballhalla as the Valkyries continue to vie for this year's championship trophy. The WNBA Finals are scheduled to begin on Oct. 17.
