October has arrived and with it will soon come the opening tip of the 2026-27 NBA season.

From there, an 82-game marathon will stretch across six more months, featuring an in-season tournament, some loaded holiday slates, a perhaps hyper active trade deadline and the annual celebration of the Association known as All-Star Weekend.

It should be a thrill ride from start to finish, and you'll surely want to catch as much of it as possible. To help you do just that, we'll provide all the need-to-know dates to put on your calender before digging into a couple of the biggest stories stemming from the recently opened training camps.

Oct. 30: Emirates NBA Cup Group Play tips off

Nov. 27: Emirates NBA Cup Group Play concludes

Dec. 4-5: Emirates NBA Cup Quarterfinals

Dec. 8 and/or Dec. 9: Emirates NBA Cup Semifinals

Jan. 10: All NBA contracts are guaranteed for the remainder of the season

Camp Buzz: Pistons Finally Sign Jalen Duren

It may have taken forever and a day for pen to reach paper, but the Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren finally ended his extended stay in restricted free agency. Both sides came together on a fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million deal, as ESPN's Shams Charania first reported.

Duren's free agency always figured to be tricky, but few could've foreseen the stalemate sticking this long. He was difficult to price, though, since his breakout 2025-26 season (featuring his first All-Star and All-NBA selections) was immediately followed by a shaky playoff showing.

While the two are officially reunited, time only knows what (if any) damage was done to this relationship along the way. Per Charania , Duren's "representatives made it clear that he felt disrespected by the process" and "took issue with weight clasues in some of the team's previous offers."

Maybe the often ugly business side of basketball gets left at the negotiating table, and everyone can move on as if this never happened. But this situation will be highly scrutinized, especially if Duren and/or Detroit struggle to build off of their 2025-26 regular-season success.

Camp Buzz: Point-LeBron Running Philly Offense?

The Philadelphia 76ers will arguably carry the most loaded-on-paper lineup into the new campaign. They'll also have a ton of mouths to feed within an offense now featuring two former MVPs (LeBron James and Joel Embiid) and two 2025-26 All-NBA honorees (Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown).

While the Sixers will need to collectively manage their egos and play their respective parts offensively, they'll also probably need someone to get this offense organized. It sounds like that someone will be the 41-year-old James more often than not:

James has only spent five percent of his career point guards as a nominal point guard, per Basketball-Reference, but he knows this role as well as anyone. Most of his offensive ecosystems have orbited around him, and he has dished out the fourth-most career assists in NBA history (12,016 and counting).

If James has a signature skill beyond his unprecedented longevity, it's probably his cerebral approach to the game. It makes sense, then, for the Sixers to lean into that intelligence and task him with getting all of the puzzle pieces properly sorted.
