The Golden State Warriors are maintaining financial flexibility to pursue a major star such as Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić during the 2027 offseason, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
The Golden State Warriors are maintaining financial flexibility to pursue a major star such as Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić during the 2027 offseason, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
"The Warriors are one of those teams out there that are looking around and rubbing their fingers together and thinking, 'Are we sure Jokić isn't gonna become available next summer?' They are one of those teams that hopes, 'We could have max cap space, we've got Steph Curry,'" Fischer reported Thursday on the Deals and Dunks show.
"They still think that they will be able to attract, whether it be a trade or on the open market, someone big next summer," he added.
The Warriors had a relatively quiet offseason this summer, making small additions such as Georges Niang and Brandon Williams while missing out on LeBron James.
Golden State could be targeting a blockbuster move to maximize the final years of franchise icon Stephen Curry's career, as the 12-time All-Star is 38 years old.
It's worth noting that Curry is the only member of the Warriors who has a cap hit above $20 million next season (via Spotrac ).
Golden State might make a run at Jokić, who earns $59 million this year before holding a $62.8 million player option for his 2027-28 campaign.
The three-time MVP chose not to hold extension discussions with Denver in June, but is still looking to remain a member of the organization for the remainder of his NBA tenure.
"My idea is to sign next summer and stay with Denver for the rest of my career," Jokić said in July, per USA Today's Marcus D. Smith . "My idea and desire is to stay in Denver. I'll probably sign next year ... My desire is to play the rest of my life in Denver."
Still, the Warriors could attempt to convince him to join forces with Curry before he potentially signs another extension with the Nuggets.
