Angel Reese leaves win over Liberty early after taking elbow to the face from Sabrina Ionescu

Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese left their 83-65 win over the New York Liberty early on Wednesday night after taking an elbow shot just before halftime.

Reese was guarding Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu on the wing during what looked to be the final play before halftime of their game at the Barclays Center. But as Ionescu made her way through a swing, she inadvertently drilled Reese in the face with her elbow. Reese reared back, clearly in pain, and walked off the floor to the tunnel.

The foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after a review. Reese came back to shoot her free throws after the incident, and sank them both to give the Dream a 15-point lead at halftime.

But Reese did not take the floor to start the third quarter, and was replaced in the starting lineup by DeWanna Bonner . Specifics of Reese's injury are not yet known. She returned to the bench midway through the third quarter, but did not enter the game the rest of the way.

Liberty veteran Jonquel Jones left the game early, too, after she rolled her ankle while stepping on a fan's foot after taking a shot. She limped off the floor to the bench midway through the third quarter.

Jones was quickly ruled out with a left ankle injury. Further specifics are not yet known.

Wednesday wrapped up the regular season for both teams. The Dream finished with a 30-14 record after the win. They closed the year winning nine of their last 10 games, and are locked into the No. 4 seed .

Allisha Gray finished with 24 points to lead the Dream. Naz Hillmon added 16 points, and Jordin Canada had 12 points. Reese had six points and six rebounds before she went out.

The Liberty, who won the Commissioner's Cup earlier in the season, are currently in eighth in the standings with a 26-18 record. The loss locked them into the No. 8 seed. They were also without Branna Stewart on Wednesday due to left knee soreness, something that was done as a precautionary measure.

Jones finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds in the loss for the Liberty. She was the only starter from the team to hit double figures.

While it doesn't appear that Reese's injury is too significant, her absence would undoubtedly hurt the Dreams' chances at making a deep playoff run should she be out for a substantial stretch.

As for the Liberty, now in the final playoff spot, they appear to have lost both Jones and Stewart at perhaps the worst possible time.
