NBA Draft Pick Trey Kaufman-Renn Granted TRO for Sixth Year of NCAA Eligibility

As college football is trying to navigate a situation with players drafted into the NFL coming back, college basketball has been thrust into the same situation with Minnesota Timberwolves draftee Trey Kaufman-Renn.

Per Nathan Baird of the Indianapolis Star , Kaufman-Renn has been granted a temporary restraining order against the NCAA that will make him eligible for a sixth year in college basketball.

Baird noted the judge's ruling means the NCAA can't deny Kaufman-Renn's "eligibility based on his five years in college and four years playing for the Boilermakers, or his professional status."

Kaufman-Renn, who was selected with the No. 59 overall pick by the Timberwolves in June's draft, filed a lawsuit in August seeking an additional year of college eligibility.

Even though Kaufman-Renn arrived at Purdue for the 2021-22 season, he redshirted and didn't appear in a game his first year. He did appear in 147 games for the Boilermakers over the next four seasons.

Under the NCAA's age-based eligibility rule , student-athletes who enter college no later than the academic year after their 19th birthday will have up to five years of eligibility.

Kaufman-Renn's argument was based around the rule and if it had been in place when he originally got to Purdue that he wouldn't have had to sit during his true freshman season.

Baird noted there is currently no set date for a preliminary injunction hearing.

It's unclear where Kaufman-Renn intends to play college basketball, assuming he remains eligible when the 2026-27 season begins. He wrote on his Instagram Story after Wednesday's ruling that his time at Purdue "has come to an end" and he is "excited for what's next."

Kaufman-Renn made the All-Big Ten first team as a junior during the 2024-25 season. He averaged 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over the course of his four seasons at Purdue.
