On the heels of a first-round playoff exit, the Indiana Fever have many notable impending free agents to decide if they want to retain as they look to take the next step in their development.

Fever general manager Amber Cox told reporters on Saturday that Sophie Cunningham, who is among that group of free agents, is someone they plan to have talks with about bringing back.

Cunningham spent the past two seasons with Indiana after being acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Mercury. She has been a solid offensive contributor playing primarily off the bench, shooting 42.4 percent from three on 3.8 attempts per game in 73 appearances for the Fever.

Defense is an area where Cunningham and the Fever have struggled recently. Her 113.7 defensive rating ranked among the bottom 20 for all qualified players during the 2026 season.

Indiana finished ninth in defensive rating and 11th in points allowed per game out of 15 teams in the regular season.

In addition to Cunningham, Kelsey Mitchell is also set to become a free agent and seems likely to earn a max contract after a historic scoring season . Caitlin Clark is also eligible for an extension.

The Fever have $3.6 million in cap space with seven players currently under contract for 2027. This is going to be a crucial offseason as the team continues to build around Clark.

Cunningham has proven to be a solid fit with this group, but the Fever's financial outlook and her shooting ability figures to make her a sought-after player that at least opens the door for her potential departure.

The WNBA's free-agent negotiating period is set to begin on February 4.
