Stephanie White Details Major Similarity Between Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Iconic WNBA Championship-Winning Duo

The Indiana Fever have already secured their spot in the 2026 WNBA playoffs, but they are showing no signs of slowing down. On Saturday, the Fever picked up their 26th win of the year after defeating the Connecticut Sun 111-91.

However, it was not just the result that caught attention. After the game, head coach Stephanie White made a special comparison between Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell and one of the most memorable backcourts in WNBA history.

During the postgame press conference, The Athletic's James Boyd asked White what it was like to watch the growing chemistry between Clark and Mitchell and whether another backcourt duo came to mind when she watched them play.

"The only other two that I can think of off the top of my head are Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter. I mean, when you think back to those Phoenix days, like they were a dynamic backcourt that could put up big numbers."

"Could both get their own shot, could get other people involved. But it's been a long time since we've seen the explosiveness of two players like Kelsey and Caitlin have been doing, and been doing it with remarkable consistency," White said .

Taurasi and Pondexter were a major part of the Mercury team that won the WNBA championship in 2007 and 2009.

During the 2009 championship season, Pondexter led the league with 648 points, while Taurasi finished second with 631. Now, years later, Clark and Mitchell are putting together a similar partnership in Indiana.

They showed exactly why White made the comparison against Connecticut. Both players finished with 34 points, combining for 68 of Indiana's 111 points. Clark also added 12 assists, while Mitchell added four assists.

Interestingly, the game did not start well for the Fever. Connecticut came out strong, and Indiana trailed 28-19 after the first quarter.

That quickly changed. Clark and Mitchell helped spark the comeback as the Fever turned the point deficit into a 58-43 halftime lead. Indiana scored 39 points in the second quarter, completely changing the pace of the game.

The Fever will now get some time away from regular-season action before returning to the court. Their next game is scheduled for September 18 against the Toronto Tempo.
