Jalen Brunson Reacts to 'King of New York' Nickname After Knicks' 2026 NBA Title Win

New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson isn't embracing the moniker recently bestowed upon him by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani dubbed Brunson the "king" of New York City after he played an instrumental role in the Knicks' championship run.

The three-time All-Star discussed the nickname on the newest episode of the Road Trippin' Show . He said he has "never called myself the 'King of New York'" and "will never call myself the 'King of New York.'"

Brunson can't stop others from calling him the king of the Big Apple, but it's easy to see why he'd want to distance himself from that distinction. That would be quite the crown to wear.

The Knicks aren't going to win every single NBA title between now and when Brunson eventually retires. Even if the franchise's fortunes take a turn, it may do little to dampen the general goodwill toward the guard.

Eli Manning's popularity with New York Giants fans endured even as his performance declined and the team struggled to contend. The same was true for New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

For Brunson, the 2026 Finals probably made him New York royalty in perpetuity.
