DETROIT — The Tigers have acquired left-handed hitting middle infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from the Boston Red Sox .
Per a report by Masslive, com and confirmed by The Detroit News, the Red Sox sent Cheng to the Tigers for cash considerations on Thursday, Oct. 29.
Cheng is 25 and was teammates with Tigers' Hao-Yu Lee for Chinese-Taipei in the World Baseball Classic last spring. He played in 14 games with the Red Sox last season, mostly at shortstop, hitting .256/.318/.282 with just one extra-base hit.
Interesting to note, the Red Sox won 13 of the 14 games that Cheng played.
In 94 games at Triple-A Worcester, Cheng hit .241/.345/.390 with a .735 OPS, the best of his three Triple-A seasons.
Interesting to see where he might fit into the crowded middle infield mix in Detroit, with Kevin McGonigle, Javier Báez and John Peck manning shortstop and Lee, Zach McKinstry and possibly Max Anderson at second.
