Caitlin Clark’s Unexpected Exchange With Italy Coach Goes Viral During Team USA Clash

Almost every WNBA fan waits for Caitlin Clark's sideline moments. Similarly, her recent exchange with Italy women's basketball head coach Andrea Capobianco caught the attention of eagle-eyed social media fans.

In their FIBA World Cup encounter on September 6, 2026, Team USA led Italy 13-8 with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter. But as two officials were debating a foul, the game came to a halt. When it came to speaking with a referee, Clark, who is often in the forefront of similar situations, got in on the action. Capobianco gave Clark one of his most animated reactions to date when he saw her. Now his reaction is making the rounds online.

The Mirror US reported that Capobianco said, "Non capisci, I seen you," fusing Italian and English when he addressed Clark , according to expert lip reader Nicola Hickling of LipReader Ltd. via Covers . According to Hickling, Clark's response was far more direct: "Stop complaining."

Either way, the online community had already started having a field day while watching the match live, as one X (formerly Twitter) user posted, "Caitlin rizzing the Italy coach 😭😭😭."

Another person joked, "He's confronting the wrong person 😂 Caitlin will argue with you."

Although Capobianco appeared to disagree with Clark on that particular point, the Italian head coach is wise enough not to ignore the brilliance of the Indiana Fever guard completely. This is because before Team USA's game against Italy, Capobianco had some kind words for Clark.

In a clip shared by Euro Women's Hoops on X, the Italian coach can be heard saying, "From a technical standpoint, I think Caitlin is incredible. From an image standpoint, she makes this sport even more enjoyable. Because, besides her ability to score, she makes everything she does look beautiful."

Nevertheless, fans were amused to see the whole Clark-Capobianco exchange, with some dubbing it "absolute comedy." Some even joked, saying that "caitlin gave bro his first smile of the night."

As Team USA fought to avoid its first loss at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in 20 years on Sunday, Clark had a rough night herself. She went scoreless from the field in her team's 55-52 win over Italy in Berlin. The Fever guard scored one point in the game and went 0-for-6 from the field. She also missed all three of her three-point attempts.

Clark played 19 minutes and recorded two turnovers, one steal, one assist, and four rebounds. Interestingly, the 24-year-old Team USA guard had never before gone an entire game without making a field goal at the WNBA or collegiate level. Her previous career low was three points on 1-of-10 shooting for Indiana against the New York Liberty in June 2024.

Together, Clark, Kahleah Cooper, and Breanna Stewart shot 1-for-19 from the field during the Sunday game. Overall, Stewart and Clark shot 1-for-15 from the field.

On Sunday, Team USA's remarkable winning streak was nearly over. With just 55 points against Italy, Team USA had its lowest scoring total since 1971.

Team USA hit 1-of-12 from three-point range and 29 percent from the field. Many believe Kara Lawson's team's 32-game winning streak could have ended if they hadn't had a significant lead in the charity stripe.

Per ESPN , speaking after the narrow win over Italy, Team USA head coach Lawson said, "We've seen that through the tournament that every game feels like a dogfight. It's really hard. On any given night, if you're not prepared to play, you'll lose."

The tight victory, in spite of the scare, guaranteed Team USA's place in the knockout round and increased the unprecedented World Cup winning streak to 32 games.
