Team USA may have swept the group stage, but fans and experts are still not convinced by their starting lineup and rotations at the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup . Joining the conversation is Sports Illustrated's Robin Lundberg, who isn't convinced by Kara Lawson's tactics.
In a recent video on his YouTube channel , Lundberg bluntly expressed his concerns about Chelsea Gray starting for the American team. While he acknowledged Gray's experience and clutch factor, keeping both Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers on the bench doesn't sit well with him.
The American broadcaster said, "The biggest issue that I think most people are having with Team USA is the lineup distribution and the rotations. And Chelsea Gray is just simply not the best point guard on the team."
Lundberg further made his case by presenting statistics for all three point guards. He acknowledged that the sample size was only three games, but the numbers still reflected what Clark and Bueckers bring to the table.
The American broadcaster highlighted that both Clark and Bueckers lead the team in point differential when they are on the court. He also noted that both point guards rank at the top of the list in assists.
Lundberg's assessment certainly raises questions about Kara Lawson's rotation decisions. Team USA will next face Hungary in the FIBA World Cup quarterfinals. If everything goes well, the Americans might face Spain or the winner of Italy vs. Australia in the semifinals.
Kara Lawson Needs Caitlin Clark And Paige Bueckers In The Lineup
While Clark seems to be struggling at the FIBA World Cup , experts believe it is largely because of the limited playing time she has received throughout the group stage. According to Lundberg, the Iowa native has been effective despite her short time on the court, especially when playing alongside Paige Bueckers.
Highlighting additional statistics, Lundberg pointed out that "the most effective lineups" have included both Clark and Bueckers. The best lineup featured both point guards alongside Angel Reese , Aliyah Boston , and Rhyne Howard , posting a +76.4 rating.
Lundberg believes that Kara Lawson needs to settle on the right lineup if Team USA plans to win every knockout game and reach the final. He also thinks France will reach the gold-medal game, and that is when Team USA will need its best lineup, which might not include Jackie Young , Chelsea Gray, and Kahleah Cooper.
