The cost for UNC's 2026-27 men's basketball roster exceeds $20 million, per Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina, as the Tar Heels enter a new era under the leadership of former Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone.

Malone inked a six-year deal worth more than $50 million, per ESPN . The 54-year-old most recently led the Nuggets for 10 seasons and guided them to the 2022-23 NBA championship.

The Tar Heels brought Malone aboard after parting ways with head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons. Davis' first team finished as the runner-up in the national championship game, and the 2023-24 squad made the Sweet 16. However, the 2022-23 team failed to make the NCAA tournament, and the last two squads didn't advance past the round of 64.

UNC is now undergoing a major overhaul, both to its coaching staff and its roster. Per the Tar Heel Times , this year's team will have 11 new players. They include 4-star forward Maximo Adams, who is ranked No. 26 on the 247Sports Composite list of the top 100 Class of 2026 recruits. Four-star center Sayon Keita ( No. 61 ) and 4-star forward Kevin Thomas ( No. 101 ) have also entered the fold.

The Tar Heels have also been busy in the transfer portal, adding players such as Utah guard Terrence Brown (19.9 PPG) and Virginia Tech guard Neokilis Avdalas (12.1 PPG, 4.6 APG).

Malone has a tall task in front of him in getting so many new players on the same page, but the talent is there on the sidelines and on the court to get it done.
