Rutgers MCBB HC Steve Pikiell Announces Cancer Diagnosis, No Timeline to Return to Team

Rutgers head men's basketball coach Steve Pikiell announced Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

In a statement posted on the official Rutgers Men's Basketball X account, Pikiell wrote that he underwent successful surgery and put together "a kick-ass game plan to finish treatment" with his doctors:

Pikiell noted that he will "still be involved with the team to the best of my ability," but added that he has "great confidence" in associate head coach Brandin Knight and the rest of his staff.

Per Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press, Pikiell intends to coach during the 2026-27 season, but if he is unable to do so, Knight would serve as the interim head coach.

Rutgers athletic director Keli Zinn said in a statement that there is "no set timeline for Coach Pikiell's full return."

The 58-year-old Pikiell is preparing to enter his 11th season as head coach at Rutgers.

He has compiled a 161-160 overall record and a 77-119 mark in Big Ten play with two trips to the NCAA tournament, one to the NIT and one to the CBC.

The Scarlet Knights made back-to-back trips to the NCAA tournament in 2021 and 2022, and they reached the Round of 32 in 2021.

Rutgers has not been back to the NCAA tourney since 2022, though, and it is coming off three consecutive losing seasons, going 15-17 in both 2023-24 and 2024-25, and 14-20 last season.

Prior to his time at Rutgers, Pikiell was the head coach for 11 seasons at Stony Brook, going 192-156 with one NCAA tourney berth, three NIT appearances and two CBI appearances.

For his career, Pikiell owns an overall record of 353-316 at the Division I level.

If Pikiell is unable to perform his duties at any time during the 2026-27 season, the reins will be handed to Knight, who played collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh and appeared in one NBA game for the Houston Rockets in 2004-05.

Knight was an assistant coach at Pitt from 2008 to 2016, and he has been an assistant at Rutgers since 2016, taking on the associate head coach role in 2021.
