LINDSIDE, WV (WVNS) - It was a night of sheer purple reign at the H.E. Comer, Jr. Sports Complex in Monroe County on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Not only did the James Monroe Football team take down their rivals from down 219 in Greenbrier East in overtime, but their Girls Basketball team also got their shining moment. During halftime, the Lady Maverick players and coaching staff from last year's title run finally received their championship bling.

"It's just a wonderful feeling to be able to watch them mature throughout the year and as well through the summer. They've been waiting for these rings all summer, so. I think it's funny how important it is to them, not funny, but it is a big deal for everyone. They have earned it, certainly, and this moment here with the community and everything behind them, it means a lot to them in the future," said Head Coach Shari Helvey.

The rings are black and gold, with the James Monroe letter logo in the very center.

The Lady Mavericks had no seniors in 2025-26, and a lot of these girls have been putting in the work during the offseason in hopes of repeating. Several of them are currently suiting up for some of the other Lady Maverick sports teams, like volleyball and soccer.
