WNBA news: Chris Paul pulls up for Wings-Mercury game

The Phoenix Mercury hosted the Dallas Wings at Mortgage Matchup Center on Monday, with NBA legend Chris Paul showing up to show support for the WNBA.

It was the back end of a home-and-away series between the Mercury and the Wings, who battled at College Park Center on Saturday. Dallas beat Phoenix, 87-82 , for its sixth straight win.

Paul pulled up at courtside, having a lively chat, most probably about basketball, with ex-WNBA forward Tamera Young.

The 41-year-old Paul has close ties with Phoenix, having starred for the Phoenix Suns from 2020 to 2023. In his first season with the Suns, he helped them reach the NBA Finals in 2021.

The future Hall of Famer also has direct links with Wings guard Paige Bueckers , who joined his plant-based snack brand as an equity partner in December.

The future Hall of Famer, who retired in February, has always been a proud ally of the WNBA. In 2022, the league named him the inaugural recipient of the Kobe & Gigi Bryant Advocacy Award for his significant contributions to advancing girls' and women's basketball.

"I have seen firsthand Chris' appreciation of the WNBA and the game at every level for women and girls. His ardent support of our game strongly reflects the legacy of Kobe and Gigi. He serves as a leader and role model for other professional athletes in growing the future of the game for young girls and all fans," said WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert in a report from ESPN's Mechelle Voepel.

As of this writing, the Wings are ahead of the Mercury in the fourth quarter. Bueckers has 25 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, while Alyssa Thomas has 13 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists for Phoenix.
