Angel Reese ties Alyssa Thomas for most double-doubles in WNBA single-season history but now faces 1-game suspension after latest tech

Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese rebounded from a scoreless first quarter Friday night against the Portland Fire to notch her 28th double-double of the 2026 campaign, tying Phoenix Mercury frontcourt standout Alyssa Thomas for the most in single-season WNBA history.

That said, she shot only 5 of 14 in a 101-83 defeat and picked up her eighth technical foul, which triggers an automatic one-game suspension from the league unless the foul is rescinded.

Reese, who finished with 16 points and 16 boards, was T'd up in the fourth quarter after she and Fire guard Carla Leite were tangled up in the lane.

A player or coach receiving their eighth technical foul during a WNBA regular season results in a one-game suspension, per league rules. Every technical beyond that threshold comes with a $1,500 fine. And every two additional regular-season technicals following the eighth carry another one-game suspension.

Last season with the Chicago Sky, Reese served a one-game suspension once she was administered her eighth technical . This time around, she's set to miss Sunday's home game against the Minnesota Lynx.

While the technical, poor shooting numbers and game outcome poured some water on her recent hot streak, Reese still made some more history Friday night.

Four days earlier, she set the W's single-game and single-season rebounding records in Los Angeles with a 26-board performance during a victory over the Sparks . And now she shares the single-season double-double title with Thomas.

Thomas, a six-time All-Star, logged her 28 double-doubles in 2023 with the Connecticut Sun. Along the way, she piled up double-digit points and assists 11 times. Six of those outings featured triple-doubles (no other WNBA player has more than five triple-doubles all-time, and Thomas has 22 and counting for her career ).

All of Reese's double-doubles this season have resulted from her scoring 10-plus points and mounting 10-plus rebounds, the first of which came in her Dream regular-season debut . It's worth noting, however, that she's stacked at least five assists in five of her double-doubles. On Friday, she added six helpers to her stat line.

Notably, she sniffed a triple-double last week in a road win over the Sparks that saw her amass 20 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. That night, she shot 9 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc, and her Dream rewrote a single-game franchise record with 124 points .

Reese scored a career-high 31 points this past Saturday while helping Atlanta take down Thomas' Mercury on the road . The Dream clinched a playoff berth in the process.

The 24-year-old three-time All-Star has elevated her game in her first season with the Dream, who acquired the LSU product in a trade with the Sky this spring . She's averaging north of 16 points per game, and she entered Friday with a league-leading 12.4 rebounds per game.

Unfortunately for Reese, it looks like she'll have to sit out a game before getting an opportunity to surpass Thomas and return to her stat-sheet stuffing ways.
