"I'm strictly d—ly" - Sophie Cunningham gets brutally honest about "lesbian mafia" in the WNBA
Theo Von asked Sophie Cunningham an unexpected question about the WNBA, and she had quite the answer.
Although people love her for her refreshing authenticity and confidence in who she is, Sophie Cunningham's natural beauty perfectly rounds out her unique character in modern sports, making her one of the most beloved athletes.
With her boldness, direct comments, and unapologetic personality that counter today's norms, the Indiana Fever guard has quickly gained a large fanbase, exceeding 4 million followers on Instagram.
What also makes Sophie different from most is her sexuality. Specifically, her preference is for males instead of females, as opposed to a significant number of WNBA players, who are gay.
Ultimately, everybody is aware of the unconventional dating scene in the WNBA.
Most notably, the league has seen a growing trend of players forming relationships with each other, whether on the same team or not, which has brought some hilarious drama on the court. Former lovers can become teammates, or current couple teammates can get traded away, etc.
"There is a web," said Sophie with a laugh on comedian Theo Von's podcast. "But it's, like, fascinating. I'm on the outside of that web. So, I just kind of sit back and eat my popcorn and watch it all unfold. And it's entertaining. It's fun."
On the flip side, having teammates date each other can become a high-risk scenario, as Michael Porter Jr. perfectly described .
So, when she was asked whether there is a "lesbian mafia" in the WNBA, Cunningham was quick to respond, reminding everyone of her sexual preference.
"Dude, honestly, I'm like strictly dickly. So I have no idea," said Sophie. "Like, I don't know who the mafia is or whatever."
"Like, guys only," said Sophie. "But like, to each their own. Go do what you want. I don't [care]. Like who gives a flying f–k."
And for the Fever guard, her only care in the world goes to how her team performs, regardless of anyone's relationship status.
Cunningham doesn't pay attention to the lore of former lovers
Still, there is some underlying lore that former lovers can get back at each other, such as flirting with an ex's teammate, as Von hilariously described. However, Sophie revealed she doesn't register those kinds of situations, as her only goal as an ultimate competitor is to get the W at the end of the day.
"I'm not in it, but you know your teammates and people they've been with or have not been with. You know the tea, what's going on. So, when you're playing those people, it's not like you're focused on that. You're literally trying to f–king win a game," said Cunningham.
For Sophie, she doesn't mind what goes on in other people's lives, as long as it doesn't affect her and the performance of her squad.
