Boston College coach Luke Murray takes Ice Bucket Challenge after UConn's Dan Hurley nomination

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has traveled around the college basketball world this month, most recently through an early branch of Dan Hurley's coaching tree.

Boston College head coach Luke Murray, who spent the past five seasons as a UConn men's basketball assistant before accepting the Eagles job this offseason, completed the challenge Tuesday after being nominated by Hurley . A video posted to the program's X account showed a group of smiling Boston College players dumping the contents of a Powerade cooler onto Murray's head as he remained impressively composed while being drenched in ice water.

"I want to thank two-time national champion, the legendary Dan Hurley, for nominating me for the Ice Bucket Challenge," Murray said. "These guys behind me are excited to be a part of it, to do our part to eradicate a terrible, terrible disease. So, thank you, Coach Hurley."

Murray continued the chain by nominating another up-and-coming college basketball coach in Ben McCollum, who led Iowa to the Elite Eight during his first season in charge of the program.

Hurley completed the challenge Monday afternoon outside the on-campus Werth Family UConn Basketball Center after being nominated by Texas coach Sean Miller. The 53-year-old tactician was also joined by his UConn players, who were similarly excited to douse their coach. Hurley needed a few paces and let out a loud yell after his ice bath.

Since gaining popularity as a viral fundraising trend in 2014, the Ice Bucket Challenge has remained a popular tool for raising money for ALS research. The challenge asks participants to dump a bucket of ice water over their heads or make a $100 donation to an ALS charity. An estimated $135 million was raised in the United States and $220 million worldwide, with notable figures such as LeBron James, Justin Bieber and former President George W. Bush taking part.

NFL great Chris Johnson announced his ALS diagnosis at age 39 earlier this summer and pushed for an Ice Bucket Challenge revival to kick-start another round of fundraising and awareness. Many college basketball coaches are participating ahead of the 2026-27 season. Along with Hurley and Murray, head coaches Luke Loucks (Florida State), Shaheen Holloway (Seton Hall), Scott Drew (Baylor), Brandin Knight (Rutgers, interim) and Leon Rice (Boise State), among others, have completed the Ice Bucket Challenge.
