Florida State Seminoles freshman center Marcis Ponder is already drawing national recognition before playing his first official college game.

Ponder has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2027 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, presented annually by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to the top center in Division I men's college basketball. The award is part of the Hall of Fame's Starting Five honors and is named for three-time NCAA champion and Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The recognition comes after an encouraging preseason debut for the 7-foot, 285-pound freshman.

Ponder made an immediate impression in Florida State's exhibition victory over the Auburn Tigers , finishing with 13 points, 21 rebounds and three blocks in 25 minutes. The Seminoles won 82-71, with Ponder's work on the glass standing out in his first appearance in an FSU uniform.

Head coach Luke Loucks has set an extremely high ceiling for the freshman, recently saying he believes Ponder could become one of the most productive centers in the ACC and potentially lead the country in rebounding if he stays out of foul trouble and consistently uses his size around the basket.

Those expectations are backed by Ponder's prep résumé. He arrived at Florida State as a consensus four-star prospect after averaging 20.1 points, 13.1 rebounds and 5.4 blocks per game during his final prep season. He was ranked as the No. 4 center in the 2026 class by 247Sports and earned Grind Session Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Ponder's role figures to be substantial immediately. His combination of size, rebounding and rim protection gives Loucks a true interior presence as FSU prepares to open the regular season.

Now, before that season has even begun, Ponder has already been placed among the centers to watch nationally.
