Pete Alonso hits career home run No. 300 at Mets' Citi Field, draws standing ovation and curtain call from his former home fans

Pete Alonso's first game back at Citi Field on Monday night since leaving the New York Mets for the Baltimore Orioles was an emotional one.

On Tuesday, he punctuated the homecoming with a significant career milestone. In the second game of the series between the Mets and Orioles, Alonso hit the 300th home run of his career. And Mets fans cheered him like he was still playing for the home team.

Alonso hit the solo shot in the top of the ninth inning. And despite tying the game at 3-3, Alonso's shot received an ovation from the Mets fans in the stands.

The home run ultimately sent the game to extra innings, where Alonso's Orioles secured a 7-5 win in 11.

Alonso spent his first seven MLB seasons playing for the Mets and hit 264 of his now 300 home runs in a New York uniform. He was one of baseball's most exciting sluggers throughout his Mets tenure and remains beloved in New York, as evidenced by his warm welcome this week.

Fans arrived at Citi Field on Monday with signs greeting Alonso, with one reading "We Miss You Pete!" The Mets greeted him with a tribute on the video board, and the crowd serenaded him with a chant and multiple standing ovations.

Alonso's former Mets teammates, including Francisco Lindor , joined in on the ovation when Alonso took the plate for his first at-bat. Alonso reciprocated the love by removing his helmet and acknowledging the crowd.

Alonso went hitless Monday night, but his Orioles left the game with a 2-1 victory.

On Tuesday, he delivered with the home-run power that made him a beloved figure in Queens.

While Alonso was a linchpin in New York's lineup for the better part of a decade, the Mets didn't prioritize signing him to a new contract as they revamped their roster in hopes of competing for a World Series this season. He reportedly didn't receive a formal offer for a contract extension and left last winter to sign a a five-year, $155 million deal with the Orioles.

New York's roster revamp hasn't worked out. The Mets entered Tuesday's game in last place in the NL East at 69-81 and already eliminated from the playoffs after Monday night's loss .

Mets fans, meanwhile, understand that the decision to leave wasn't necessarily Alonso's and have shown him lots of love during his stint back at Citi Field. He gave them more to cheer for Tuesday night than the Mets have for most of the season.
