Runs were hard to come by for the Glendale Desert Dogs on Friday night in a 1-0 road loss to the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League. Glendale only had five hits, all singles, and Dodgers prospects accounted for three of the five hits.
Third baseman Chase Harlan had two hits, while second baseman Charles Davalan had a single and walked, but that wasn't enough for the Desert Dogs to touch home plate.
Cody Morse inherited runners on first and second base with two outs in the sixth inning, and stranded them with a groundout. Then Morse added a scoreless seventh, with one walk and a strikeout. The left-hander has been nearly spotless in his nine appearances so far in the Arizona Fall League, allowing only one unearned run on two hits and five walks in eight innings. To go with that 0.00 ERA, Morse has 14 strikeouts among his 33 batters faced for a tidy 42.4-percent strikeout rate.
Sam Horn, the Missouri quarterback turned Dodgers minor league pitcher, did not pitch Friday, but in his professional debut in the AFL has a 3.86 ERA in seven innings with eight strikeouts and four walks in his seven games. Horn was among the 10 pitchers in Arizona profiled by Geoff Pontes at Baseball America .
"He mixes three pitches: a mid-90s four-seam fastball with seven feet of extension, an 83-85 mph sweeper and a firm upper-80s changeup with negative vertical break." Pontes wrote . "Horn has a limited track record, but he's an exciting upside play."
