Red Sox Reportedly Get Clarity on Series vs. Cubs with Rain Looming

The Red Sox are scheduled to end their regular season on Sunday, but an impending nor'easter is threatening to make the final series a logistical nightmare.

With rain in the forecast from late Friday night through the end of Sunday, fitting in three games that could be critical to the Cubs — and still could mean something for the Red Sox — might be a challenge.

Red Sox and Cubs officials said Tuesday that the teams were in communication with MLB about potential plans, and it now appears one of those plans may soon receive the green light.

Here's the latest update on the series between the Red and Cubs as weather threatens to impact the schedule.

The Red Sox and Cubs are planning to play a Friday doubleheader, The Boston Globe's Tim Healey reported Wednesday.

While the decision has yet been officially made, the report indicates the league is planning to be proactive with Saturday and Sunday expected to be heavily impacted by rain in Boston and limited options to reschedule games with the postseason starting just two days after the end of the regular season.

The third game, Healey reports, would be planned for Saturday, with MLB believing the "best chance" to play would be Saturday rather than Sunday. The Saturday game, currently scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET, could be moved up, Healey said.

While the games might not matter for the Red Sox, who can formally secure the No. 5 seed in the American League before Friday, at least one and likely more will matter to the Cubs as they battle with two other teams for one home-field advantage designation in the NL wild-card series.

Both the Red Sox and Cubs are guaranteed to start the postseason on Tuesday, Sept. 29, so MLB is hoping to avoid playing any games on the Monday after the regular season ends for the rest of the league.
