The New York Mets are promoting Mariano Duncan to their major league coaching staff, the New York Post's Joel Sherman reported Monday. Sherman says that Duncan is "expected to assist in multiple areas with the position player group."

Mets Promote Minor League Coach Mariano Duncan to MLB Staff

Duncan, 63, is set to enter his ninth season with the organization. He joined the Mets in 2019, serving on the Kingsport coaching staff before becoming High-A Brooklyn's bench coach in 2021. He spent the past five seasons as Double-A Binghamton's bench coach, helping the Rumble Ponies win the Eastern League championship in 2025.

Earlier this month, the Mets, who have openings for their coaching staff, interviewed long-time hitting coach Kevin Long and have shown interest in interviewing hitting coach John Mallee for a role on the staff. On Monday, however, Long and the Mets reportedly did not "match and he is no longer a consideration." As for Mallee, he too has reportedly withdrawn his name from a coaching role consideration with New York.

Duncan brings extensive familiarity with the Mets' player development system, having worked with prospects moving through the organization . His background also includes major league coaching experience, serving as the Los Angeles Dodgers' first-base coach from 2006–10.

Before working for the Mets, Duncan worked as a minor league hitting instructor in the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers organizations. A former MLB infielder, Duncan played 12 seasons with the Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. He won World Series championships with Cincinnati in 1990 and New York in 1996, earning an All-Star selection with Philadelphia in 1994.

Duncan's promotion gives manager Andy Green 's staff a coach whose experience spans both major league dugouts and the daily work of developing prospects. After years spent working with players throughout the organization, he will now help the position player group at the highest level. His exact responsibilities remain unclear, but his background in hitting instruction and five seasons with the organization's minor league staff give him several areas of experience to draw upon in his new role.
