The Houston Astros have hired Randy Flores as general manager, the team announced Friday.
Flores previously served as assistant general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019-26. He initially joined the Cardinals as their director of scouting in 2015.
Flores will serve as the full-time replacement for Dana Brown, as Houston parted ways with Brown on Aug. 24.
Before Flores' front office career, he spent eight seasons in the majors as a relief pitcher from 2002-10. He won a World Series title with the Cardinals in 2006.
After his playing days came to a end, he served as USC's pitching coach while earning his graduate degree with the university in 2013. Flores also worked as a college baseball analyst for ESPN and the Pac-12 Network.
He eventually joined the Cardinals as their director of scouting, a role in which he oversaw all aspects of their scouting department. This included the amateur draft.
While St. Louis missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year in 2026, the team still boasts an intriguing collection of young talent that includes Alec Burleson, JJ Wetherholt and Jordan Walker.
Flores released a statement regarding his new role as part of Friday's announcement.
"I am excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity," Flores said. "The Astros have a long winning tradition under Jim Crane and I look forward to contributing to the success. I want to thank the Cardinals organization for the opportunities and support that made this next chapter possible. My family and I are excited to make Houston home."
The Astros won the AL West crown in 2026, but finished with a mere 81-81 record before they were swept by the Chicago White Sox in their AL Wild Card Series matchup.
As Houston looks to go on a deeper playoff run next season, Flores will operate as a key piece of its front office under team owner Jim Crane.
