With the Minnesota Twins beginning to fall out of the playoff race, star outfielder Byron Buxton will undergo hip surgery next Friday, Aaron Gleeman reports. The expectation was that Buxton was going to receive the surgery at some point, but he wanted to wait and help the Twins compete for the postseason. With Buxton getting the surgery soon, he is hoping to be ready for 2027 spring training.

" Byron Buxton said the hope is that he'll be ready for spring training," Gleeman reports.

There is a chance of an MLB lockout as well. That would obviously be far from ideal for MLB, but it would give Buxton even more time to recover from his hip surgery. However, the outfielder is seemingly hoping to be ready for the currently scheduled spring training.

While injuries did impact Buxton this season, he still made a significant impact overall. The 32-year-old earned the third All-Star selection of his big league career. He ended up appearing in 93 total games, hitting .254/.319/.511 with 25 home runs across 408 plate appearances. He most recently appeared in a game in late August.

The Twins are still technically in postseason contention. They would need a tremendous finish to the season as well as the teams in front of them to completely collapse to reach the playoffs, however. At the moment, Minnesota is in third place and six games back of first place in the American League Central standings. The Twins are also 4.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot, and there are three teams ahead of them who are also chasing the final AL Wild Card position.
