Mets' Jared Young exits game on stretcher after taking knee to the head from pitcher Nolan McLean

A collision between teammates created a scary scene for the New York Mets on Thursday, which resulted in first baseman Jared Young getting taken off the field on a stretcher.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Justin Crawford hit a grounder down the first-base line. It looked like an easy play, but the ball wound up in an awkward place between the two Mets who could have fielded it, Young and pitcher Nolan McLean .

McLean looked like he would field it, but didn't pull up until Young planted his foot on first base. Then Young reached out from the bag to get the ball, which McLean kept running down. McLean's knee wound up going full speed into Young's head .

Young appeared momentarily knocked out on the play, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

After receiving attention from athletic trainers, Young was placed on a stretcher and removed from the game. He gave the Citi Field crowd a thumbs-up on his way out.

The Mets later reported Young was taken to the hospital for further evaluation and that he had feeling in his extremities. Interim manager Andy Green told reporters after the game that a CT scan came back negative and Young is experiencing concussion-like symptoms, via The Athletic's Will Sammon .

"It feels like we've avoided the scariest outcomes," Green reportedly said.

Young has been a relative bright spot for the Mets this season. He entered 2026 with only 44 career MLB appearances across three seasons with the Mets and Chicago Cubs , along with stints in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league organization and the Doosan Bears in South Korea.

Those made for low expectations with Young now at 30 years old, but he entered Thursday slashing above-average numbers at .268/.332/.431 in 102 games as mostly a bench bat. With only nine games left on the Mets' schedule after Thursday, that season could now be over.

Young's injury is the latest blow for a Mets team that ranks as the most disappointing in baseball this year. At 69-83, the team currently sits in last place in the NL East despite possessing the second-largest payroll in MLB .
