Yankees add Jazz Chisholm Jr. to IL with sprained right thumb
Chisholm will be shut down from baseball activities for 7 to 10 days.
The New York Yankees are adding second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the injured list due to a sprained right thumb, per manager Aaron Boone .
Chisholm will be shut down from baseball activities for seven to 10 days, leaving it unclear how long his stay on the IL will be.
The second baseman has played in 134 games this season. He is slashing .232/.312/.403 with 19 home runs and 55 RBI. If Chisholm is unable to return during the regular season, this would be the lowest batting average of his career for seasons in which he played in at least 22 games.
One of the lone bright spots for Chisholm's 2026 campaign is that he has tied a career high with 40 stolen bases. There was a time when he said his goal was a 40/40 season, and it seemed after his 31 home runs last year that he may have a decent shot at the feat, but barring an extreme power surge upon his return, he figures to fall well short this season.
Boone did not know who would be replacing Chisholm, but at least in the immediate short term, it will be Jose Caballero playing second base Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies .
One of the options from New York 's minor league system is Anthony Volpe . The middle infielder had struggled in the bigs with New York both in the field and at the plate.
Volpe was sent down in favor of George Lombard Jr., but the move sparked something in the young player. Volpe has played in 37 games with the team's Triple-A affiliate and is batting .264 with 11 home runs. Over 56 games with the Yankees earlier in the season, the infielder was hitting .240 and had only one home run.
New York heads into Wednesday with an 82-62 record, four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East race. The Yankees currently comfortably hold the AL's No. 1 Wild Card spot with a nine-game spread between them and the team falling out of the playoff picture.
