Brewers manager Pat Murphy declines to censor himself as things go badly during in-game interview that's actually worth hearing
In-game interviews are generally worthless. Here's the exception.
In-game interviews are generally worthless. This is the exception.
With the San Diego Padres and Brewers locked in a scoreless tie early in Tuesday's NLDS Game 3 — a 4-3 Padres win that extended the series — Milwaukee's Sal Frelick hit a line drive to center field at Petco Park.
The ball was well-struck and looked like extra bases if it landed. But Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill had the ball in his sights off the bat.
This all happened as Brewers manager Pat Murphy conducted an interview with FS1 sideline reporter Tom Verducci. Verducci asked Murphy how he liked the approach of his team up to that point in the game. As Murphy started to answer, Frelick hit his line drive.
Here's Murphy's response, which swiftly shifts as he realizes the ball is doomed for Merrill's glove:
"Eh, we've been a little antsy, I think we've swang at some pitches … Get in the gap, Sal! God damn it, Merrill!"
The broadcast quickly pivoted back to the booth team of Adam Amin, Adam Wainwright and A.J. Pierzynski, who shared a few chuckles at what they and the entire broadcast audience had just witnessed. The production crew then deftly zoomed in to a closeup of Murphy looking on sternly at the game from the Milwaukee dugout.
It added up to a few moments of baseball broadcast gold. In a sports broadcast world littered with terrible in-game interviews, few, if any, have been better than this.
