Updated Weather Forecast for Cubs vs. Red Sox at Fenway Amid MLB Playoff Race as Nor'easter Nears

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs have a series with plenty of playoff implications this weekend, and Mother Nature isn't going to make things any easier.

The Cubs will travel to Fenway Park for a Friday-to-Sunday series, and a multi-day nor'easter storm could end up postponing some of those games. According to the Weather Channel , heavy rain and wind are expected all weekend in Boston.

Friday: High of 61 degrees, Low of 54 degrees, 51% chance of rain

Saturday: High of 61 degrees, Low of 55 degrees, 77% chance of rain

Sunday: High of 63 degrees, Low of 56 degrees, 70% chance of rain

Monday: High of 63 degrees, Low of 54 degrees, 55% chance of rain

The Red Sox have already secured a playoff spot and are just about locked into the second wild-card slot, so a potential postponement means little to them outside of it being a bit of an inconvenience.

But Boston's indifference to the outcome of the games means everything to the National League wild-card race.

The Cubs currently hold the top wild-card spot at 87-69, and the San Diego Padres are tied with them. The Philadelphia Phillies hold the final wild-card slot and are four games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

All three teams are more than likely on their way to the postseason, but seeding is far from settled.

Chicago will face the Miami Marlins this week, a team that has already been eliminated from playoff contention. It will then face the Red Sox, and if Boston ends up having to play a doubleheader because of the storm, it will surely make lineup and pitching decisions while looking ahead to the start of the postseason.

That could give the Cubs a potentially advantageous path to securing home-field advantage over the Phillies and Padres.

Philadelphia has a tough week ahead as it faces two of the top teams in baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays. San Diego likewise has a tough slate against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks.

A powerful storm is more than likely going to impact the games in Boston this weekend, and now fans will have to wait to see what MLB's plan will be.
