Padres closer Mason Miller added to paternity list, will miss pivotal Game 3 on Tuesday vs. Brewers
Miller was tied for third in MLB in saves this year with 38.
The San Diego Padres are one game away from elimination, down 2-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. They'll be without their All-Star closer as they try to extend their season.
MLB approved a roster change for San Diego, as closer Mason Miller is going on the postseason paternity list and will not be available for Game 3 on Tuesday .
The Padres replaced Miller with reliever Wandy Peralta.
The MLB playoffs come with specific roster rules. A team must submit a roster for each series. If a player is replaced during a series due to injury, he must miss that series and , if the team advances, the following series.
But Miller was added to the postseason paternity list, and there are different rules for that. He can miss a minimum of one day and a maximum of three. When he returns, he can replace Peralta without being forced to sit out another series if San Diego makes a comeback against Milwaukee.
Miller is one of baseball's best closers. He had a career-high 38 saves this season in 66 appearances and finished with a 1.67 ERA.
The 35-year-old Peralta gives the Padres an extra lefty out of the bullpen. He made 65 appearances this season and went 3-3 with a 3.61 ERA.
San Diego heads into Tuesday's Game 3 on the brink of elimination in the best-of-five series. Games 1 and 2 both came down to the wire, with the Brew Crew winning each by one run.
Miller blew the save in Game 2 , when Jackson Chourio laced a walk-off single to center that drove in both Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich, giving Milwaukee a 4-3 victory.
If the Padres lose without Miller on Tuesday, their season is over. If San Diego wins at home Tuesday, the series will continue with Game 4 on Wednesday in San Diego, and Miller would be eligible to return.
