The San Diego Padres found a way to extend their season without All-Star closer Mason Miller.

The Padres climbed back into the NLDS and beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Tuesday at Petco Park. That gave them their first win in the series and forced Game 4 on Wednesday.

And they did it all without their star closer.

MLB approved a roster change for San Diego on Tuesday afternoon, as Miller landed on the postseason paternity list. Miller's wife, who was due to give birth to the couple's first child later this month, went into labor Tuesday afternoon. As a result, the All-Star was not available for Game 3. The Padres replaced him with reliever Wandy Peralta.

The MLB playoffs come with specific roster rules. A team must submit a roster for each series. If a player is replaced during a series due to injury, he must miss that series and , if the team advances, the following series.

But Miller was added to the postseason paternity list, and there are different rules for that. He can miss a minimum of one day and a maximum of three. When he returns, he can replace Peralta without being forced to sit out another series.

Miller is one of baseball's best closers. He had a career-high 38 saves this season in 66 appearances and finished with a 1.67 ERA.

The 35-year-old Peralta gives the Padres an extra lefty out of the bullpen. He made 65 appearances this season and went 3-3 with a 3.61 ERA.

San Diego is still on the brink of elimination in the best-of-five series. Games 1 and 2 both came down to the wire, with the Brew Crew winning each by one run.

Miller blew the save in Game 2 , when Jackson Chourio laced a walk-off single to center that drove in both Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich, giving Milwaukee a 4-3 victory.

After the Padres' win at home on Tuesday, the series continues with Game 4 on Wednesday in San Diego. Miller is eligible to return for that contest. Whether he'll be ready to do so remains to be seen.
