Ketel Marte Trade Must Be Made By D-Backs Amid Latest MLB Rumors Ahead of 2027 Season
As the Arizona Diamondbacks enter the offseason, the future of star second baseman Ketel Marte remains murky.
As the Arizona Diamondbacks enter the offseason, the future of star second baseman Ketel Marte remains murky.
Marte has spent the past 10 years of his career in Arizona, but a trade could benefit both sides.
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic , multiple teams have expressed interest in acquiring the three-time All-Star on the trade market.
Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen was also noncommittal when asked about Marte's availability in trade discussions.
"I think we need to look at some ways to shake the team up a little bit," Hazen said when asked if he would listen to offers on Marte, per Piecoro. "I think we've had this team together for a long time. We've had some success, but we're going to find ways to make some changes in some cases. I don't know where that's going to take us."
Marte previously signed a six-year extension worth $116.5 million with Arizona in April 2025, as he's still still under contract through 2030 and owns a player option for his 2031 campaign.
It's worth noting that Marte can choose to stay with the Diamondbacks regardless of his potential involvement in trade talks, as he holds a full no-trade clause.
Still, he may be willing to waive his no-trade clause and move on from Arizona after a recent tumultuous stretch as a member of the club.
In 2025, Marte's home in Scottsdale was burglarized during the All-Star break. He eventually went to the Dominican Republic following the All-Star festivities, missing the Diamondbacks' first three games after the break as a result.
Marte later apologized to his teammates for the situation.
During the ensuing offseason, the Diamondbacks held trade talks involving Marte as the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays were all linked to the second baseman.
While he ultimately remained in Arizona, his 2026 campaign was also eventful.
On Aug. 17, the Diamondbacks placed Marte on the restricted list after he didn't show up for a game against the Boston Red Sox. It turned out that he had returned to Arizona to have an MRI on his knee and was placed on the injured list instead.
Marte later revealed that he made an individual decision to skip the matchup with Boston after waking up in significant pain and planned to apologize to his teammates once again.
He ended the 2026 season by hitting .249 with 22 home runs, 31 doubles and 76 RBI while appearing in 141 games. It represented a step back for Marte compared to past years, as his .748 OPS was his lowest mark since 2022.
Although it could be risky for the Diamondbacks to potentially sell low on the 33-year-old following the 2026 season, it isn't hard to imagine his trade value dropping drastically if his production continues to decline in 2027.
On the other hand, opposing front offices may believe that Marte will be able to bounce back following a possible trade. After all, he racked up 89 home runs while slashing .283/.368/.519 from 2023-25.
Arizona has missed the playoffs in each of the three years since its 2023 World Series appearance and could look to make significant roster changes in order to acquiring younger players that fit the timeline of star outfielder Corbin Caroll, who's just 26 years old.
While Marte's overall tenure on the Diamondbacks has been successful, it's time for a change of scenery.
