White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf jokes he may convert to Catholicism after playoff series win, letter from the Pope

The Catholic Church may have a new member after Wednesday night.

Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, shortly after the franchise won their first playoff series since 2005, couldn't help but think about the letter he received from the Pope earlier this week.

"Imagine a Jewish kid from Brooklyn getting a letter from the Pope," he said, via ESPN's Jesse Rogers .

"I'm going to convert," he added, joking.

Hours before the White Sox's playoff opener against the Houston Astros on Tuesday, the club announced they had received a letter from Pope Leo XIV. The Pope is a Chicago native and undoubtedly the franchise's most famous fan.

The letter didn't specifically address the playoffs, but it was addressed to Reinsdorf and thanked him for a letter he had sent the Pope the previous month.

"It is my hope that the White Sox will continue to foster bonds of friendship and solidarity among people, and thus bear hopeful witness to the possibility of living and working together in peace," the Pope, previously known as Robert Prevost, wrote, in part .

While not specifically a "good luck in the playoffs" letter, it's easy to see why Reinsdorf feels the way he does about it.

The White Sox rolled to a 7-3 win over the Astros at Daikin Park on Wednesday night, which completed the sweep in their wild-card series. The White Sox never trailed throughout the two-game series, either.

The series win was the team's first since the 2005 season, when the White Sox won the World Series. This is their first trip to the American League Division Series since 2021, too, and comes on the heels of three straight 100-plus loss seasons.

The White Sox will take on the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS starting on Saturday.

And though he may not be attending mass anytime soon, Reinsdorf and the White Sox are absolutely feeling the support from Vatican City.
