Jazz Chisholm Jr. Injury Update, Latest News on Return Timeline to Yankees Amid Anthony Volpe Buzz

The New York Yankees will have to continue their bid to hold on to the top AL Wild Card spot at least for now without second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Chisholm is being placed on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb sprain that will keep him from baseball activities for seven to 10 days, manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday.

Boone said he did not yet know who would replace Chisholm on the roster but would be comfortable playing Anthony Volpe at second base, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post .

Chisholm suffered the injury while sliding into second base during Tuesday night's win over the visiting Colorado Rockies, per MLB.com .

The news comes after the Yankees began transitioning Anthony Volpe from shortstop to second and third base in Triple-A action last month.

The slide took place in Tuesday's eighth inning. Chisholm was replaced by José Cabellero for the top of the ninth.

Volpe, who played the entirety of his MLB career at shortstop and won a Gold Glove at the position during his rookie 2023 season, was demoted Aug. 4 after struggling early in the 2026 campaign.

He has since found success with Scranton/Wilke-Barre RailRiders, where he has batted .295 with ten home runs and seven doubles in 27 games while regularly playing at second base.

"I know he's been a complete pro and completely got after it down there in everything they've thrown at him... he's obviously swung the bat incredibly well," Boone said Wednesday about Volpe. "That's not an easy thing to do when you've been in the big leagues, and you've been the guy in the big leagues, and you've got to go back."

The Yankees went into Wednesday's matchup against the Rockies with Cabellero at second base.

The departure of Chisholm, who is batting .232 with 19 home runs this season, marks the latest injury absence from a Yankees lineup that just got back Aaron Judge after three months on the injured list.

Judge made his comeback Tuesday against the Rockies, but was pulled by Boone after six innings. Boone said there was a possibility Judge would be limited again in his second game against the Rockies, but that he also might "push a little more" in Wednesday's matchup.
