World Series 2026: Dozens of people exit field after Brewers' game-ending double play is overturned on review

Game 1 of the World Series ended awkwardly.

Game 1 of the 2026 World Series featured two different endings, but still resulted in a 3-2 Milwaukee Brewers win .

The Brewers appeared to take a 1-0 series lead after Tampa Bays Rays catcher Liam Hicks ground into a double play with the bases loaded and one out, ending a stressful inning for closer Trevor Megill as he tried to protect a two-run lead.

Players and fans began celebrating, as the usual postgame mechanics of a World Series game began playing out. However, everything had to pause when the Rays challenged the play.

Review quickly showed why. Rookie Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt had taken his foot off second base quite early as he prepared to throw to first base. Too early, it turned out, as the umpires announced the call had been overturned.

Instead of game over, the Rays had runners on second and third with two outs and Jonny DeLuca up to bat. That resulted in some awkward scenes, as dozens of people — and a few golf carts — had to leave the field for the game could get started again.

Fortunately for the sanity of Milwaukee, Megill proceeded to strike out DeLuca to end the game for real this time. The Brewers have a 1-0 lead in their first World Series in 44 years.

Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, with Rays ace Drew Rasmussen and Brewers rookie Logan Henderson set to take the mound. Both teams are in pursuit of their first World Series title.
