The New York Yankees could reportedly be considering allowing second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to hit free agency this offseason.
The New York Post 's Jon Heyman reported Thursday the Yankees are expected to extend a qualifying offer to closer David Bednar but are "unlikely" to make the same offer to Chisholm.
The Post 's Joel Sherman previously reported the qualifying offer for the 2027 season will be $23.15 million.
Early MLB Offseason Predictions on Free Agency and Trades 🔮
Bednar, 32, recorded a 2.47 ERA and 1.038 WHIP through 69.1 innings across 64 relief appearances this season. Chisholm, 28, batted .231 with 19 home runs, 55 RBI and 41 stolen bases in 137 games.
Chisholm is one year removed from becoming the third player in Yankees history to record 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a single season.
The following campaign ended with a postseason marred by defensive errors that led to Chisholm getting pulled from the starting lineup for Games 1 and 3 of the ALDS.
He expressed discontentment with Yankees manager Aaron Boone for not informing Chisholm ahead of time he would be replaced by Anthony Volpe in the Game 3 starting lineup.
When asked about his future with the Yankees after the Tampa Bay Rays completed their series sweep in Game 3, Chisholm still indicated he was interested in returning to the Bronx.
Bednar made three appearances during the postseason, allowing a hit and a walk but no runs in his three innings on the mound.
Keeping him in the Bronx would mark the first time in years the Yankees have committed significant money to their bullpen.
The Yankees haven't had a reliever make more than Bednar's 2026 season of $9 million since Aroldis Chapman and Zack Britton in 2022, per Spotrac .
Eight other Yankees players are heading into the offseason as pending free agents . The list most notably also includes Trent Grisham, who signed a qualifying offer to stay with the Yankees last season, alongside Paul Blackburn and Paul Goldschmidt.
Any qualifying offers to eligible players must be issued by the fifth day after the World Series. The Yankees could receive draft compensation should any players receive qualifying offers but sign with other teams.
