New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells discussed his base-running mistake late in the team's 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of their American League Division Series matchup on Saturday.
"I thought it kicked off more than it did, he made a good play on the ball," Wells told reporters after the game. "Two outs there, trying to make something happen, be aggressive with not much going on in the game. Obviously, love to be safe there or standing on second base."
With two outs in the top of the eighth inning and New York trailing 1-0, Wells was easily thrown out at third base while attempting to stretch a double into a triple.
New York had been no-hit through seven innings at the time, as Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas was attempting to hold Wells at second.
Wells explained that he initially didn't see Rojas.
"Saw his hands up, I was already committed," Wells told reporters. "Made two good throws and got me."
He also acknowledged the risks that came with his decision.
"As you can see, that wins and loses games," Wells said. "You have to take risks. But in that situation, obviously the risk was wrong. I can't tell you if I'd go again because the situation would be different. I took the risk, didn't work out. I think I needed to try to make something happen there, obviously it didn't work out."
While Rays starter Drew Rasmussen was thriving against New York's lineup, it was still a bold decision by Wells considering he owns the fifth-worst average sprint speed among all Yankees players at 26.0 feet per second this season (via Statcast ).
There's also a chance New York would have been able to drive him home if he stayed at second base, especially since the Bronx Bombers were coming off an AL Wild Card round in which they hit .450 with runners in scoring position .
Instead, the Yankees now face a 1-0 series deficit.
