Roman Anthony will miss remainder of AL wild-card series due to hand and wrist injuries, replaced by Curtis Mead
Anthony was removed during the Red Sox's Game 1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony will miss the remainder of the team's American League wild-card series against the New York Yankees .
Anthony was pulled during Boston's Game 1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday . Afterward, he was diagnosed with damage to the muscles in his wrist. Anthony reportedly also aggravated the hand injury that bothered him throughout the 2026 season.
Manager Chad Tracy discussed the injury on Wednesday.
"He was sent back last night after leaving the game," Tracy said. "We sent him back to Boston for extra, additional imaging which actually revealed some new strains to different muscles in his wrist in addition to exasperating the old injuries. It's not great."
Anthony spoke with the media and was clearly still dealing with the impact of his diagnosis.
"I feel sick to my stomach. Haven't slept much. It doesn't feel real... to get the same news again, and even worse... it's hard."
The Red Sox outfielder is out "for the foreseeable future ." Anthony started Game 1 on Tuesday as the designated hitter, batting leadoff. He went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.
Anthony was surprisingly pinch-hit for in the top of the sixth inning. Andruw Monasterio took his place and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Anthony has been replaced in the Game 2 lineup by outfielder Jahmai Jones , who will lead off and DH.
The MLB approved a roster change , allowing Curtis Mead to remain on the Red Sox roster for the remainder of the wild-card series.
The 22-year-old Anthony played in 55 games this season. He slashed .245/.339/.396 with five home runs and 15 RBI.
Anthony suffered a partial tear in the ligament that connects his right ring finger to his wrist on a check swing on May 4. The injury caused him to miss 101 games, and he returned on Aug. 29.
Teams are allowed 26 players on their postseason rosters, but this number can be changed before the start of each round. Anthony could only be replaced by another position player. Also, by rule, he must miss the ALDS, should the Red Sox advance.
While it doesn't seem likely based on the diagnosis, Anthony is eligible to rejoin Boston for the championship series if they make it.
Boston was blown out on Tuesday, dropping Game 1 9-0 to New York. The Red Sox must win Wednesday to force a Game 3, or they will be eliminated.
