Padres lose to Rays in brutal fashion after drop of would-be game-winning out over the wall for home run

This one is hard to watch. Unless you're a Rays or Diamondbacks fan.

The San Diego Padres entered Sunday seeking to avoid a sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays and to get on the right side of the NL wild-card race. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, they appeared to have both goals secured.

But a painful twist of fate shifted the outcome of the game in Tampa Bay's favor.

The Padres held a 3-1 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and a man on first base. With an 0-1 count, All-Star closer Mason Miller delivered a slider that caught the inside of the plate.

Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca turned on it and sent a high fly ball to deep left field near the foul pole. It didn't quite have enough to get over the wall. Padres left fielder Samad Taylor caught the ball at the warning track for what appeared to be the final out of the game.

But it wasn't. Taylor crashed into the low wall in left field with his glove held above it. He couldn't hold onto the ball, and it dropped over the wall for a game-tying two-run home run.

The game went from there to extra innings tied at 3-3. After a scoreless 10th, the Padres plated a run in the top of the 11th for a 4-3 lead.

The Rays countered with a run before loading the bases in the bottom of the 11th. Jorge Mateo delivered with a soft liner to left field that dropped for a walk-off 5-4 Rays win.

They Rays stormed the field to celebrate the unlikely victory.

The Padres, meanwhile, were left to stomach their third loss in three games against the Rays and their fifth in their last six games.

Making the matter more painful for the Padres, Taylor was only in left field because he subbed in as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. A part-time player, Taylor had made just 25 previous appearances in the outfield this season.

The loss dropped the Padres to 72-65 in the midst of a heated race for the final wild-card spot in the National League. As of Sunday, that put them a half game behind Arizona (73-65) in the chase for the NL's final wild-card berth.
