Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony reacted to the wrist injury that prevented him from suiting up in Game 2 of the team's American League Wild Card Series matchup with the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
"It's brutal. It's confusing," Anthony said, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. "I feel like I grinded all year throughout something to get to where I am right now and to get to play in a game last night. And for that to happen, it's confusing. It sucks."
"I feel sick to my stomach," he added. "It doesn't really feel real, to be honest. There's so many different emotions and feelings throughout the course of this rehab process this year, that to get to this same news again, and even worse. It's just like I don't know. It's hard to have an answer to anything right now."
After suffering a 9-0 loss to the Yankees in Game 1 of the best-of-three series, the Red Sox entered Wednesday's action attempting to keep their season alive.
Anthony started the series-opening contest on Tuesday, going 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts before he was replaced by Andruw Monasterio in the sixth inning.
Following the game, Anthony was driven back to Boston and underwent imaging that revealed multiple new strains in his hand, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
The 22-year-old appeared in just 55 games during the 2026 regular season after suffering a partially torn tendon in a joint that connects his right ring finger to his wrist.
Anthony noted that he was "never really 100 percent" after making his return despite the pain being "tolerable," per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe .
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 MLB draft showed promise during his inaugural season with the Red Sox in 2025, racking up eight home runs, 18 doubles and 32 RBI while posting an .859 OPS across 71 games. He finished No. 3 in AL Rookie of the Year voting .
In Anthony's shortened 2026 campaign, he recorded five homers and 11 doubles to go along with a .245/.339/.396 slash line.
He was replaced by Jahmai Jones in Boston's lineup for Game 2 on Wednesday.
