MLB wild-card rosters: Aaron Judge, Luis Arraez unable to return; Giancarlo Stanton, Garrett Crochet make the cut

Aaron Judge is reportedly not on the New York Yankees ' roster for their wild-card series against the Boston Red Sox , according to Jack Curry of the YES Network.

Judge's status for the wild-card round had been in question since the Yankees placed him on the injured list due to a calf strain on Sept. 18. On Sept. 22, manager Aaron Boone announced that the Yankees were planning to play without Judge in the wild-card round.

The injury list placement was Judge's second of the season after a stress fracture in one of his upper ribs sidelined him for three months. He struggled in his return, as he went 4-for-23 at the plate before the calf injury sidelined him a second time.

But Judge rebutted Boone's comments a day later, telling ESPN that he was preparing to play in the wild-card round.

"That's what the plan is," Judge said. "Try to get my body ready so I'm ready to go."

The call was ultimately left to the Yankees, and Judge made his final case to the team Monday afternoon in a batting practice session as the team prepared for their wild-card series.

The session was his first formal workout since he landed on the injured list, and it included multiple rounds of light batting practice before simulated at-bats against Yankees pitchers.

While Judge had taken swings since his calf injury, he told reporters that he'd been limited to running on an anti-gravity treadmill designed for rehabilitation . He'd yet to run the bases during his rehab process.

His session Monday left Yankees brass less than a day to make a decision on his status before Tuesday's 10 a.m. ET deadline for wild-card rosters to be submitted. The team ultimately decided Judge wasn't ready for action, leaving the outfielder to try to prepare for a return during a possible American League Division Series if the Yankees advance.

Also for this series, Giancarlo Stanton , who hasn't played since April due to multiple calf injuries, managed to make the Yankees' roster. Garrett Crochet , who has been sidelined since April due to a left shoulder issue, will also make his return for Boston.

Game 1 between the Yankees and Red Sox is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET Tuesday in New York.
