‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ star Angie Katsanevas is spilling her hair care secrets — she hopes her castmates are taking notes
The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ star Angie Katsanevas shares her favorite Kérastase hair care and travel must-haves from Skims, SkinCeuticals and more.
Talking Shop is our series where we talk to interesting people about their most interesting buys. She may have technically started as a “friend of,” but Angie Katsanevas has really always been a snowflake-holding member of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.” She never fails to make viewers laugh with her iconic one-liners and props (who could forget the scroll from season five), but she balances her humor with sincerity as she shares her Greek-American heritage, as well as her role as a caring friend, supportive mom and serious business woman. And this season, which is currently airing on Bravo every Wednesday, Katsanevas says she’s excited for viewers to get to know her even better. “We never know what they’re going to show, but there’s a lot of things I get to share in my personal story this season,” says Katsanevas. Standout moments include spending time with her daughter, Elektra, and her dad, who’s about to turn 90, as well as going behind the scenes of her business, the Lunatic Fringe Salon franchise. Katsanevas, who’s been a hairdresser for decades, even went to Washington D.C. earlier this year to testify before Congress on behalf of small businesses, becoming the first Housewife to do so. I recently caught up with Katsanevas, who shared some of her all-time favorite products, including a few that you’ll recognize from memorable moments on the show. Want more from NBC Selected? One thing about Katsanevas is that her hair is always perfectly shiny, smooth and frizz-free — and she’s more than happy to tell you her secret to getting it that way. “I’m Kérastase girl,” she says, which all RHOSLC fans know — after all, the brand is mentioned in some of the show’s most famous scenes. “I love the products because they give you hold, softness and volume, but your hair can still move. I think we’ve gotten away from stiff hair — high body count hair, if you will,” says Katsanevas, referencing one of her most viral one-liners. “I’ve tried a million other things, and I’ve never been able to replace Kérastase to give you that timeless, beautiful blowout.” Katsanevas’ salon, Lunatic Fringe, has carried Kérastase products and offered its professional treatments for about 30 years. She also personally works with the brand, and especially loves its Chronologiste line. “It’s a luxury hair care line that’s anti-aging,” she says. “It helps fight signs of aging like dryness, dullness and lack of volume or thickness, which a lot of women battle as their hair changes. I’m going to be 53, and to have these products is pretty incredible.” Her top pick is the Chronologiste Overnight Youth Serum, which she puts in her hair before bed to work while she sleeps, and her other must-have is Kérastase’s Mousse Bouffante. Whether she’s traveling with family or her Housewives castmates, Katsanevas says packing her favorite things is essential to sleeping and resting well. Something that goes into her suitcase first is Skims pajamas, which you’ve seen her wear numerous times on the show. “I’m obsessed with them,” she says. “My daughter Elektra got me into them — she said, ‘Mom, they feel like a hug,’ and they do. They have the perfect weight to them, and now I can’t sleep without my Skims jammies.” “When I’m going on ‘Watch What Happens Live,’ I don’t want a crease in my face for having slept wrong and have my wrinkles on display, so I take my Slip Silk Pillowcase with me everywhere I go,” says Katsanevas. “It makes a huge difference for my hair and skin.” The machine-washable pillowcase is made from 100 percent pure mulberry silk, and it has a zipper closure to help it stay on your pillow as you move through the night. “I used to not travel with all my skin care because I didn’t want to pack everything, but I have to have certain products, and this is one of them,” says Katsanevas about SkinCeuticals’ vitamin C serum. She applies it every morning, and its main active ingredient, 15 percent L-ascorbic acid, helps correct the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, loss of firmness and brightness, according to the brand. SkinCeuticals also says the serum is effective for at least 72 hours once it absorbs into your skin. These under eye patches are another one of Katsanevas’ skin care essentials. She uses them pre-glam to hydrate, de-puff and smooth out her skin, or she puts them on after taking off her makeup to reset her skin and feel refreshed before bed. The patches are made with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, collagen and caffeine, and after wearing them for about 15 minutes you remove them and pat the remaining serum into the skin. Hosting is in Katsanevas’ blood. She has distinct memories of her parents, grandparents and aunts using their finest china whenever the family got together, and putting that kind of effort into hosting is something she’s always prioritized. “When people come into my home, I treat them like family,” says Katsanevas. “I love beautiful dishes, and tea cups, and servingware and having flowers out — I think it really adds to the experience. I know I go over the top, even if it’s just a little coffee date — like this season, when the women were coming over in the first episode, I went out and bought some really beautiful new appetizer plates. We’ve all gotten so busy, so people put out paper plates and cups, but the little details make it feel more beautiful. It’s fun when you have friends that notice it, like Mary [Cosby], and I want to teach Elektra to set the table, slow down and realize that it’s all part of the experience.” Katsanevas says she plans to buy her daughter, an avid equestrian, Hermes dishes from the Cheval d’Orient line to start her collection of fine china. “You’re passing down something beautiful, and you’re also passing down a memory for generations,” she says.
