NEW DELHI: If you drive into Delhi from Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad or Ghaziabad or any other NCR city, your vehicle’s emission standard is about to matter a great deal. From November 1, 2026, Delhi will stop vehicles that fall below BS6 norms and are registered outside the capital from entering. The restriction stays in force until January 31, 2027, as part of the city’s winter pollution control plan. What is the new rule?Applies to vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS6 standardsEffective November 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027Part of Delhi’s winter action plan, when air quality typically worsensGurugram traffic police have also issued an advisory for commercial goods vehiclesWho will be hit the most?Transport department estimates suggest more than 10 lakh vehicles in neighbouring NCR areas could be affected. Gurgaon and Faridabad together have nearly 2 lakh non-BS6 vehicles, about 70% of them BS3 and BS4, along with around 50,000 commercial vehicles. Noida and Greater Noida have over 4 lakh such vehicles, more than half of them BS4 and mostly petrol cars. Ghaziabad has around 4 lakh.Which vehicles are allowed in?CNG and electric vehicles can still enter Delhi. So can diesel buses and trucks that meet BS6 norms, and buses registered in Delhi. Gurugram traffic police have also warned that BS4 and older commercial goods vehicles, including light, medium and heavy goods vehicles, trucks and buses, will not be allowed in from November 1. This includes vehicles running on All India Tourist Permits. How to check if your car is BS4 or BS6Open the Parivahan Sewa website or app on your phone, and go to “Know Your Vehicle Details” on the VAHAN database. Enter your registration number and complete the verification. Then look for the “Emission Norms” or “Norms” field, which will show whether your vehicle is Bharat Stage IV, Bharat Stage VI or another standard. You can also check your physical or digital Registration Certificate. If the documents are unclear, an authorised dealer or the manufacturer can confirm. How will the rule be enforced?Authorities are tightening checks at Delhi’s borders. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and AI-powered cameras will read registration plates and identify vehicles entering the capital. Entry points from Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad are also being strengthened to physically stop non-BS6 vehicles. Around 300 transport department enforcement personnel will be deployed. Why BS6 mattersBharat Stage norms set legal limits on pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulate matter from engines. India has followed BS6 since April 2020, skipping BS5 to speed up pollution control. BS6 vehicles emit far fewer pollutants and need low-sulphur fuel. What’s next? The government plans to bring BS7 norms, aligned with Euro 7, for new cars and SUVs from April 2029, followed by small goods vehicles from April 2030 and heavy-duty vehicles from April 2031.Bottom line: With the deadline just days away, check your vehicle’s norm on VAHAN now to avoid being turned back at the Delhi border. How to check your car’s BS statusVisit the Parivahan Sewa website and open the “Know Your Vehicle Details” service on the VAHAN database.Enter your vehicle’s registration number and complete the verification.Find the “Emission Norms” or “Norms” field in the vehicle record.Read the standard shown, such as Bharat Stage IV or Bharat Stage VI.Check your Registration Certificate (RC), physical or digital, as it may also mention the norm.Ask an authorised dealer or the manufacturer if your documents do not give a clear answer.Know the result: BS6 vehicles can enter Delhi, while BS4 and older vehicles registered outside Delhi will be stopped, unless they run on CNG or electricity.(With agency inputs)You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Delhi | Silver Rate in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi | Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Petrol Price in Delhi | Diesel Price in Delhi | CNG Price in Delhi | LPG Price in DelhiStay updated with the latest Delhi news.
