Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier recently filed a civil lawsuit against Wi-Fi router manufacturer TP-Link. The lawsuit accuses the company of misleading Florida consumers about its products’ security and its ties to China. In the 59-page lawsuit, Uthmeier said that Chinese state-sponsored hackers exploited TP-Link routers sitting in American living rooms. “Many of those models cannot update themselves automatically, and TP-Link has stopped supporting them”. “They also told Floridians they had split from China and that they build U.S. products in Vietnam. That is fiction. Research and manufacturing remain rooted in China. Less than 1% of the parts in that Vietnam plant actually come from Vietnam,” he further added.TP-Link has now responded to the lawsuit, issuing an official statement saying that it is a US company, and not a ‘Chinese’ firm. “TP-Link Systems is a U.S. company that complies with U.S. privacy and data protection laws,” the company said adding “Any claims that our products present a threat to user security or grant unauthorized network access to foreign governments are baseles”.Here’s what TP-Link saidIn a press release, Steve Kovsky, corporate affairs officer for TP-Link Systems Inc. said “The coordinated lawsuits are built on false premises. They do nothing to advance national security while unfairly penalizing an industry-leading U.S. company”.“We stand fully behind the security of our products, the integrity of our company and our people, and our commitment to serving the best interests of our customers in the United States and globally. We look forward to refuting these baseless allegations in court,” Kovsky added. In the release, the company further stated”: “For months, California-based TP-Link Systems has provided state regulators with clear, verifiable documentation demonstrating two fundamental facts: TP-Link Systems devices sold in the U.S. are manufactured in Vietnam and TP-Link Systems is an independent, U.S. company that is not owned or controlled by any foreign government.”“Any claims that our products present a threat to user security or grant unauthorized network access to foreign governments are baseless. TP-Link Systems is a U.S. company that complies with U.S. privacy and data protection laws. We perform comprehensive security testing and rely on trusted third-party security labs for additional scrutiny to ensure our products meet the highest security standards and are recognized as among the most secure on the market. We meet or exceed all industry best practices for monitoring and preventing vulnerabilities and actively support our customers to mitigate any issues that occur as they are identified.
