Music sessions for Guernsey pupils with additional needs

A new music initiative designed to support pupils with additional learning needs has been launched in Guernsey.

Pupils from Le Rondin School will take part in the programme, called Music Makers, which has been launched by the Guernsey Youth Commission and Guernsey Music Centre with sponsorship from law firm Collas Crill.

Organisers said it had been tailored for children with neurodiversity, physical disabilities and communication differences in an inclusive environment.

The youth commission's chief executive, Lou Leale, said music could help children with additional learning needs express themselves, develop confidence and build social connections.

"We hope that, through regular participation, children will develop increased confidence, improved engagement with peers and adults, stronger communication and social skills, and a greater sense of belonging," Leale said.

Tim Wright, head of the Guernsey Music Service, said the funding from Collas Crill would enable specialist teachers to deliver "high-quality music education outside of school".

The funding would cover staffing costs, musical instruments and related equipment needed to deliver the programme, he said.

Kim Halliwell, the firm's group head of marketing and communications, said: "Our aim in any local sponsorship is to help create opportunities for people to shine.

"The Music Makers sessions do just that and we're delighted to be supporting the Youth Commission and the Music Service to help remove barriers and bring joy through the magic of music."

The sessions would will run alongside existing music centre groups on Saturdays, organisers said.
