A school bus crash in Central Florida on Monday killed two people, including a 10th grade student, deputies said. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 6:15 a.m. in Winter Haven when the bus, going eastbound on Old Lucerne Park Road, was struck by a Chevy Malibu that was heading westbound. “Two people have been killed: a 10th Grade girl and an occupant from one of the other vehicles,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. Deputies said the crash caused the bus to lose control and tear off its tire, and then it crashed head-on with a Jeep, causing it to overturn. Three other vehicles were involved in the crash. Deputies said that the student who died was on the bus, and the second person was in the Jeep. Their identities were not released. The bus was carrying 39 people, which included 37 high school students, who were on their way to Winter Haven High School. Deputies said the other two people were identified as the bus driver and their 9-year-old daughter. Due to the crash, Lucerne Park Road was closed in both directions. Drivers are urged to take alternate routes.
