Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Russia overnight Sunday, striking a major oil terminal in St. Petersburg and a data center, knocking out power to thousands of residents and causing fires.
Russian state media described the attack as “one of the biggest drone attacks of the year,” according to a translation from Russian.
One person was killed and five people were injured, St. Petersburg Gov. Alexander Beglov confirmed in a post on Telegram , adding that buildings and residential homes were also damaged in the aerial attack.
“Emergency services continue to work on extinguishing fires at the St. Petersburg oil terminal, the Ruchyi oil depot and industrial warehouses in the Kolpinsky District,” he wrote.
In the surrounding Leningrad region, Gov. Alexander Drozdenko said two electrical substations were struck, leaving roughly 20,000 residents without power Sunday morning.
The strikes come as Russia and Ukraine resume attacks on one another’s energy infrastructure, despite repeated warnings from President Trump to stop, blaming the strikes for rising fuel prices.
The strikes occurred days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had ordered the military to resume attacks on Russian oil refineries following a brief pause under an energy ceasefire announced by Trump.
Trump said last weekend that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop targeting each other’s energy infrastructure following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
But Zelensky accused Moscow of continuing to strike Ukrainian power facilities, violating the announced agreement.
On Sunday, the Ukrainian leader said Russia had carried out at least 76 attacks on Ukrainian energy, oil and gas facilities over the past week, leaving tens of thousands of households without electricity.
Zelensky said Russian forces had launched nearly 2,700 drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 66 missiles at Ukraine over the past week.
“The Russians are trying to cause a blackout,” he wrote on the social platform X . “And America should see that Russia is not taking any reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief or agreements.”
