'Cat in the Hat': Creepy viral trend sparks school warnings and teen arrests in US

A disturbing social media trend featuring the Dr Seuss character Cat in the Hat has prompted warnings from schools and police departments across the United States.The trend involves images and short videos showing a sinister version of the character appearing outside homes, schools or on dark streets. Some clips appear to be AI-generated, while others show people wearing costumes. Several posts also contain threats aimed at particular schools, towns or individuals.The trend began circulating in Ireland and the United Kingdom in August 2026 before spreading rapidly across parts of the US and Canada, the BBC reported.Although many users have dismissed the posts as jokes or hoaxes, authorities have warned that threatening content can cause genuine fear and may amount to criminal harassment.Teenagers face charges over threatening postsNear Wichita, Kansas, police arrested a 15-year-old after the teenager allegedly uploaded a threatening video linked to the trend.The Hutchinson police department said the student had created a TikTok account for the local community that referred to the Cat in the Hat trend. The teenager was later charged with two counts of criminal threat.“Threats of any nature are taken seriously by the Hutchinson Police Department and Hutchinson High School. Regardless of whether a post is intended as a joke, it is unlawful to cause others, particularly students, to fear for their safety,” the statement added.In Georgia, two students at Worth County High School are also facing charges over their alleged involvement in the trend. School officials said both students would face disciplinary action in addition to the criminal charges.Police increase presence at schoolsAuthorities in some communities have stepped up security after threatening posts appeared online.The Grand Junction police department in Colorado said it increased patrols at West Middle School and Grand Junction High School “out of an abundance of caution” after a Cat in the Hat post circulated. The post led to the arrest of a 14-year-old student.Police and school officials are urging students not to share or repost the material.
