Kuldeep Yadav grabs 10-fer for Yorkshire: Star spinner regains form months before India's busy Test season

Kuldeep Yadav claimed a career-best 10-wicket haul for Yorkshire against Essex, raising his hand ahead of India's busy Test season.

His recent India Test outings against Sri Lanka were poor, with Manav Suthar's two stellar performances making Kuldeep's place uncertain.

Kuldeep Yadav had a point to prove, and he made it loudly at Headingley as the left-arm wrist spinner tore through Essex's batting lineup across three days.

He produced career-best first-class match figures of 10 for 120 to help Yorkshire romp to an innings and 106-run victory, and in doing so, he delivered a timely reminder of just how dangerous he can be when he's fully firing.

Yorkshire needed this win to cement their place in the County Championship's top flight, and Kuldeep gave them exactly what they needed.

He finished with four for 70 from 20 overs in Essex's first innings, then came back even better in the second, as he claimed six for 50 from 16 overs to wrap things up.

India play two crucial Test series which are part of the ongoing WTC cycle. They tour New Zealand for a two-match series in November, followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where they host Australia for a five-match series in the New Year.

Why does this County performance matter so much for Kuldeep?

The county stint comes at a particularly important moment in Kuldeep's career. His outings in the recent Test series in Sri Lanka were, to put it plainly, underwhelming.

He went wicketless in the first innings of the opening Test while conceding 65 runs from 14 overs; the most expensive spinner in that innings. The second innings brought one wicket at a cost that didn't help his case either.

The second Test brought a different problem as Kuldeep wasn't even in the playing XI, though a BCCI statement clarified the reason was medical rather than purely selection-based.

"Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was unavailable for selection in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka. However, he can take the field as a concussion substitute, if required," the board confirmed on X.

However, there was much speculation if it was actually a tactical decision to drop him, rather than a medical one.

Manav Suthar's emergence and what it means for Kuldeep

While Kuldeep was struggling, Manav Suthar from Sri Ganganagar produced one of the most stunning performances by an Indian spinner in recent memory.

In only his second Test appearance, Suthar struck with his very first delivery in the first innings, eventually finishing with four for 76 at Galle. He then came back on the final day and tore through Sri Lanka for six for 55, completing a match haul of 10 for 131.

That figure is now the best by an Indian bowler in Sri Lanka, surpassing Harbhajan Singh's 10 for 153 at Galle in 2008 and Ravichandran Ashwin's 10 for 160 at the same ground in 2015.

The equation isn't completely straightforward. Ravindra Jadeja is untouchable in the India Test setup as his all-round value with bat, ball and in the field makes him the first name on the team sheet.

Suthar has now demonstrated he can win Tests on his own, and he offers a batting dimension too with lower-order contributions and that puts Kuldeep in a tight spot.

India's next Test assignment is against New Zealand, where the management may be inclined to go with four pacers, leaving Jadeja as the lone specialist spinner. The Australian series in India that follows later could be where Kuldeep gets his clearest opportunity, as turning pitches at home usually benefit wrist spinners, and his variations become significantly more potent in those conditions.

To remain in contention until January, he must perform at his best in the next four months; consistency will be key for Kuldeep.

The Yorkshire 10-fer is important but not enough on its own

County cricket provides great form and great rhythm, but it doesn't always translate directly into international success, and selectors know that. What Kuldeep needed this match to do is prove he's physically right and mentally reset after a difficult Sri Lanka tour, and in that sense, it does the job.

The real test will come when he's back in an India shirt under pressure, with Suthar's performances still fresh in everyone's memory. Kuldeep is still one of India's most gifted bowlers when everything clicks, as his ability to dismiss top batters with drift and turn is exceptional.

But exceptional talent alone won't keep you in the XI when a younger alternative has just taken 10 wickets in a single Test. The 10-fer at Headingley was a necessary statement. What he does next with it will define the next chapter of his international career.
