2 NDMC staffers killed as Thar rams bike from behind in Delhi Cantt

NEW DELHI: Two New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) employees were killed after a Mahindra Thar hit the motorcycle they were on from behind in Delhi Cantonment Wednesday evening.The driver of the SUV, who is also its owner and was allegedly driving rashly, was arrested.Sukhbir and Anju, both in their forties, were co-workers and Group D employees. Anju was part of the civic organisation's nursing staff and Sukhbir worked as a painter. The two were returning to their houses in the same locality of Dwarka Sector 1 after finishing work at NDMC's office on Lodhi Road."The accident took place around 5 pm. A staff member of Delhi Cantt police station, who was returning from duty, noticed that the bike was hit near the IOC Red Light and immediately alerted the police station," a senior police officer said.A team of cops reached the spot and rushed Sukhbir and Anju to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.Bhupendra, the 26-year-old Thar driver, is a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana and owns a milk booth in Rohini. Locals caught him after the accident and handed him over to police, who arrested him.A case was registered at Delhi Cantt police station under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (death due to negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Rohit, Anju's son, told TOI, "My mother had been working as a nursing staff officer with NDMC since 2007. It was largely because of her income that my two siblings and I were able to complete our schooling. She followed the same routine every day: she would leave home around 8 am and take a bus to work. On her way back, Sukhbir would drop her home as they both lived in the same locality."Recalling the moment when things fell apart Wednesday evening, Rohit said, "I received a call informing me that my mother had met with an accident. When I reached the spot, I found that she had succumbed to her injuries. The driver was speeding and deserves the harshest punishment. We want justice for my mother."Chote Lal, Sukhbir's elder brother, said he got to know about the accident after trying to reach him. "I kept calling him. Finally, a cop picked up the phone to tell me that he had died in the accident. It was just him and me in our family, no one else.
